Community of Experts

The Community of Experts Series addresses topics of common interests to the practitioners of various professional communities. These events expose the participants to new ideas as presented by a guest speaker but very importantly it creates a forum for the participants to share their experiences.

Often, Human Resource and Training Departments struggle to get the necessary budget or organisational buy-in for their training and skills development initiatives, as:-

1. Financial and headcount constraints are mentioned to reject programmes.
2. HR practitioners struggle to convince their colleagues of the possible Return on Investment (ROI).
3. Key stakeholders fail to understand how the proposed projects will add value to the company.

We continue our Community of Experts series in 2012, with a “Learnerships and YOUR Return on Investments” workshop to aid HR and Training Professionals in getting you better buy-in for your initiatives!

Amanda Parker, an Aegis skills development expert uses the case study of a Learnership to demonstrate how best to measure the ROI on training initiatives.  Attending the workshop will help you to:-
  • Promote your initiatives more effectively within your organisation
  • Provide you with insights into how you can measure the ROI on your programmes
  • Create a more people centric culture within your company
The number of delegates is limited to give the participants the opportunity to find solutions to the situation faced within their own organisation. We recommend that you invite the key stakeholders in your organisation to attend this event with you.

Topic: How to claim learneship tax breaks

Speaker: Rene Chabana, SARS Legal & Policy Division: Interpretation

Few companies really take full advantage of the tax incentives made available by SARS.

Most organisations struggle for two reasons:

  1. They do not practically understand how to claim the tax break
  2. The people in finance are not fully aware of the work done by their colleagues in training.

Rene Chabana, the SARS expert who actually wrote the interpretation notes, provided step by step advice on how to claim the tax incentive. The good news is that the rules have actually become simpler. It is still important that companies keep the right records,  they need especially need to be in the possession of a certificate from their respective SETA to prove that the learnership agreements have been registered as well as a completion certificate at the end of the programme. The delegates who attended received supporting material such as a spreadsheet for calculating the amount to be claimed and a checklist to ensure that all the needed information was being captured from the start of the project. If you were not able to attend you find here the following attachements.

a) Interpretation note that the regulations related to the learnership tax break

b) The presentation made by Rene Chabana on the day of the event
